Careers: Retail Management FAQ
How long does it take to become a Store Manager?

That depends on you. Most Assistant Managers can expect to complete the training program in 2 to 4 years. But when an individual is promoted to Manager can be influenced by a number of factors such as:
  • How quickly you progress through training. Walgreen Co. does not base promotions on seniority, but on your performance. Individuals who take responsibility for their own success are usually promoted quicker.

  • The number of store openings in your area. Walgreen Co. will open over 450 stores this year, but some markets will open more stores than others. If you are in a high growth market you'll have more opportunity.

  • Your prior experience. Individuals who have prior knowledge through experience in customer service or management may move more quickly through the training process.
How do you pay employees?

Ethics and equality are two cornerstones of our corporate culture. We want to ensure that all employees are treated fairly. Therefore our compensation program is based on fair pay for time worked.

An entry-level Assistant Manager is scheduled to work a set number of hours per week (in most areas 44 hours per week). Any hours worked greater than 40 are paid at an overtime rate of 1.5, ensuring individuals will be fairly compensated for hours worked. It also encourages store managers to not schedule our assistants for excessive hours. After promotion, he or she would move to a salary plus bonus based on the performance of their store.

Do you employ part-time Assistant Managers?

Most of our management positions are designed to train and promote individuals into Store Manager positions. Therefore, the number of part-time positions is very limited. If available, these positions are usually reserved for former interns or students who are in the process of completing their degree and will move into full-time management positions after graduation.

Do you have to have a college degree to work as an Assistant Manager?

No, a college degree is preferred but not required. Walgreens believes in hiring and promoting based on merit and performance. Very often individuals with a college degree or prior retail experience will move more quickly through our training program but there is no requirement for a degree.

What experiences or qualities should an individual possess to become a Manager?

The main responsibility of our management team is to run a business. Therefore, communication skills, leadership, honesty and the ability to work as part of a team are key traits we look for. Also, a focus on customer service, decision making, problem solving, flexibility, planning, prioritizing and goal setting are highly desirable.

As a result there is no one path or qualification that we look for. We assess each person individually, taking every aspect of that person's performance into account.

Will I have to move or relocate for the company?

Walgreens is unique among most retailers in that we have no forced relocation for our store management teams. Most major metropolitan areas have multiple Walgreen Districts. When compared to other retailers, our districts are small. Therefore, we can usually offer promotion opportunities without forced relocation. We believe that our most successful Managers grow roots in the communities they serve. Constantly moving Managers would be counter-productive to our growth.

However, if an individual is interested in moving to one of our new markets, we have a voluntary relocation program that is very comprehensive in covering relocation costs.

In what position does the typical new management candidate start?

Walgreens is a "promote-from-within" company. Almost all of our Store Managers were promoted from the entry-level Assistant Manager position. We do not usually "go outside" our company and hire individuals into Store Manager positions. In addition, we have never hired an external candidate into an Operations District Manager position.

How should I apply for a non-management position?

You should apply in person to the store where you'd like to work. If it's a new store under construction, there are two ways to apply.
  • Apply to the nearest store. Visit any Walgreen store and complete an application. If you are interested in a store under construction, complete an application at an existing store and be sure to inform the manager of the store you are interested in
